Duties
Include but not limited to,
- Assessment of student who have been referred to for an educational assessment;
- Providing intensive, evidence-based educational therapy to individual and small groups of students who have been screened and identified as experiencing barriers to learning (ex. Listening, Reading Comprehension, Spelling, Writing, Mathematics) and/or other learning barriers;
- Support teachers in identifying and implementing the most effective teaching approaches and resources for students with particular learning needs to ensure effective carry over skills learnt in therapy into the classroom;
- Attendance and participation in multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure that teachers are informed about the progress and needs of students referred and being supported in educational therapy;
- Liaise with parents and external referrals as required;
- Willingness to provide in-house staff development sessions when required;
- Understand and apply school policies.
The primary purpose of a Learning Support Specialist in a primary school is to provide tailored educational support to students who face learning challenges. This role involves assessing student’ specific needs, designing and implementing personalised learning plans in educational therapy, and closely collaborating with teachers, parents, and other professionals to promote students’ academic growth and well-being. The specialist strives to ensure that students have access to the resources and strategies they need to succeed in their educational journey.

Requirements for Eligibility
Academic Qualifications:
- Teaching qualifications (i.e. B.Ed./ H.E.D/ADE/PGCE)
- Postgraduate training in Learning Support/ Remedial Education
- SACE Registration
Skills
- Able to equip and motivate students to learn;
- Excellent ability to thoroughly assess students to determine the nature of their educational strengths and areas of difficulty and to provide relevant recommendations for intervention;
- Able to prepare resources for learning activities;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills- able to communicate effectively to children, parents and external professionals as required;
- Organised administrative skills;
- Confident in the use of ICT;
- Effective team member;
- Commitment to ongoing professional development to ensure alignment with current research and best practice.
